What are some good tips for packing while traveling in Europe?

I will be traveling in Europe for 3 weeks in the winter. What would be some good things to pack while traveling? I will be staying in hostels and traveling by train often, so I need to pack somewhat light and be able to fit everything in just a few pieces. Any suggestions on what to pack and how to pack?

I lived in Germany for 5 years and traveled extensively. .
I would always take heavy warm socks, long johns, heavy blue jeans, a few flannels shirts, and my trusty army jacket with the liner.
Of course sunglasses and good warm waterproof boots.
I carried everything I needed for a month in a regular old backpack. Not a fancy one.
Get used to washing clothing in sinks as there were no laundromats all over like here in the US. Though there were Haus Frau’s that would do same day laundry for a modest fee.
great tips from edward, other tips:
Make a list. Compose a pack list. Be sure to coordinate shirts and blouses with bottoms.
Roll ‘me up please. The best way to fit all your clothes is by rolling pants and shirts. First fold each item in half. Then simply roll.
Put under garments on the top. place all panties in a plastic bag free of any clippers, lighters or other questionable paraphernalia.

Before you get to a city and start looking for a place to stay it is always a good idea to have a reservation at a hostel. There is nary a traveler alive who doesn’t have some sort of story outlining their hubris that they could just find a place to stay when they got there only to realize that there was in fact no place to stay and the park bench they slept on, and the guy they slept on it with were none too pleasant.
Most hostels will take reservations at least six months in advance to don’t be shy about staking your claim to a comfy bed as soon as you can. Some will require a 25$ deposit, or your credit card number. An inconvenience for sure but it’s just the business. Of course, if you can avoid giving your credit card to some random person halfway around the world, it’s best to do so.
If you are not comfortable with calling hostels directly, try an online booking website like www. hostelio. com where you dont have to pay any booking fees.
Also, the earlier you reserve the better chance you have at scoring a single or double room, which will make your stay that much better.
