The Need for Recreation

Posted by hostaldelospoetas.com in Recreation on 29-11-2009

The Need for RecreationThe natural instinct for recreation is felt by the working people in common with persons of every class. They cannot afford to spend on the grand scale of those who patronize the best theatres and concerts, nor can they relax all summer at mountains or seashore, or play golf in the winter at Pinehurst or Palm Beach. They get their pleasures in a less expensive way in the parks or at the beach resorts in the summer, and at the “movies,” dance-halls, and cheap theatres in the winter. They have little money to spend, but they get more real enjoyment out of a dime or a quarter than thousands of dollars given to some society buds and millionaires who are surfeited with pleasure. Recreation to the working people is not an occupation but a diversion. Their occupation is usually strenuous enough to furnish an appetite for entertainment, and they are not particular as to its character, though the more piquant it is the greater is the satisfaction. Craving for excitement and a stimulus that will restore their depleted energies, they flock into the dance-halls and the saloons, where they find the temporary satisfaction that they wanted, but where they are tempted to lose the control that civilization has put upon the primitive passions and to let the primitive instincts have their sway. It is a prerogative of childhood to be active. If activity is one of the striking characteristics of all social life, it is especially so of child life. The country child has all out-of-doors for the scope of his energies, the city boy and girl are cramped by the tenement and the narrow street, with occasional resort to a small park. It requires ingenuity to devise methods of diversion in such small areas, but necessity is the mother of invention, and the children of the city become expert in outwitting those whose business it is to keep them within bounds. This kind of education has a smack of practicality in that it sharpens the wits for the struggle for existence that makes up much of the experience of city folk, but it also tends to develop a crookedness in mental and moral habits through the constant effort to get ahead of the agents of social control.

Recreational Kayaks

Posted by hostaldelospoetas.com in Recreation on 25-11-2009

So you’re thinking about getting into kayaking. Think it might be a good way to spend some time? Well, you’re going to need to decide on what kind of boat you want to get, and there are a few different types out there, each with their own benefits and downfalls. It is going be up to you to decide which type of kayak you need, so make sure you put some thought into the decision before you rush out and get whatever it is that you have pictured in your mind. First of all, you’ve got your basic recreational kayak. This kayak is typically ten to sixteen feet long, and made of a highly durable material, like rotomold, a high impact plastic. These are very low maintenance, and they are great for slow meandering rivers, ponds, lakes, and activities like fishing or nature-watching. You can typically find a recreational kayak at any large sporting goods department store that has an outdoors section. These are the most common, and most universally useful boats. There are also ocean kayaks. Ocean kayaks are typically longer and narrower boats, and are commonly made of fiberglass materials. Ocean kayaks are good for long journeys and cutting through waves. However, remember whenever you are kayaking in the ocean, rinse off your boat after you get out of the water to reduce salt corrosion of the metal pieces on your boat. A good type of kayak, if you just want to have a low maintenance boat, is a sit on top kayak. You do not need to worry about getting the boat filled with water, and they are typically the easiest to use. However, these boats are limited in activities. For example, they are typically not good for long trips or going down rivers. There are also inflatable kayaks out there that have come a long way in the scheme of things. Inflatable kayaks are good because they can be easily stored if you are in multiclimate area and won’t be able to go out for the winter. An inflatable kayak also allows easy of transportation. However, you will need to provide some way of inflating the kayak at different points. Along the same lines of an inflatable kayak is a folding kayak. A folding kayak offers the same benefits of an inflatable kayak, but you must take it apart and rebuilt it often. Recreational Vehicle (RV) Sales on the Rise

Posted by hostaldelospoetas.com in Recreation on 21-11-2009

As the baby boomers retire, the recreational vehicle industry has seen an upsurge in sales. For many people, nothing measures up to the independence and flexibility of enjoying the open road in a recreational vehicle (RV). There is certainly much to be said for taking your hotel with you wherever you go, and the savings on hotel costs can more than pay for the initial cost of an RV.
RV travelers realize the cost savings of this type of travel. There are no hotel rooms to book and dining in your RV can save an enormous amount of money compared to eating in restaurants every day. Owning a fifth wheel or travel trailer, whereas you can unhook your RV from your truck, saves you from having to book a rental car. For those in motor homes, many travelers will tow a vehicle behind them.
When considering the purchase of an recreational vehicle, you will be faced with three choices; a fifth wheel which is pulled by a pick up truck and attaches to a wheel inside the truck box (hence its name fifth wheel), a travel trailer which is usually pulled by a truck with a rear hitch, or a motor home. All three types of RV’s have their pros and cons and each point will need to be considered based upon your needs and your budget. Other consideration for the RV lifestyle is the price of gas. However, it is still more economical than staying in hotels and eating at restaurants every night.
Traveling in a recreational vehicle or motor home is often a good choice for those who want to travel to different locations; however, it may be less suited to those who visit the same location year after year. Travelers who visit the same location every year may find it more economical to buy a vacation home. Buying a vacation home, and renting it out when it is not being used, can be a good way to both save money on lodging and build equity for the future.
Many RV travelers come to love the freedom of the open road and the easy care lifestyle. Traveling cross-country and stopping a various parks along the way is a wonderful adventure. The traveler can choose to stay a day or as long as they want at a particular location.
A well-known fact in the RV community is the free camping at Walmart. In most states, you are allowed to camp in a Walmart’s parking lot for as long as you like. I am sure you have seen recreational vehicles lined up in Walmart’s parking lot at least on one occasion. This is a win-win situation for the traveler and Walmart. The traveler has a well-lit place to camp for the night, at no cost, and Walmart receives income from those RV owners who frequent the store. However, recently there has been an uprising among campground owners against Walmart’s free camping policy. Therefore, it is well advised that you check with the local chamber of commerce before you decide to stay a week at Walmart.

Premier Recreation Destination: The Columbia River Gorge of the Pacific Northwest

Posted by hostaldelospoetas.com in Recreation on 17-11-2009

The small town of Hood River resides at the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, a National Scenic Area and a premier destination for anyone who is serious about recreation.
Hood River was once an agricultural center surrounded by pear orchards, but fifteen years ago the town became a mecca for windsurfers. Although it was windsurfing that put the Columbia River Gorge on the recreation map, today the gamut of the recreation industry is firmly established in the scenic Gorge, and Hood River is its base of operations.
If you can name it, then there is someone doing it someplace in the Gorge – from kayaking and kite surfing to mountain biking and snowboarding. It’s all available within half an hour of downtown Hood River.
Passing along the main street of this little town where colorfully painted Victorian homes on the steep hillsides overlook several dozen shops and restaurants, there is a sidewalk bustle of hard-bodies seeing and being seen. They step in and out of boutique sport shops where one can order a custom wet-suit or select obscure handmade flies for fly-fishing.
Nearly every parking space is occupied by an all-wheel-drive vehicle sporting a Yakima or Thule roof rack that secures some kind of recreational gear.
On one survey of the six block stretch that comprises the main drag, there were one or more of the following on display atop the sporty vehicles: kayaks, snowboards, mountain bikes, windsurfing boards, skis, road bikes, and although there wasn’t a canoe this time, there often is.
Those roof-top items are just the beginning. A look inside some of the rigs reveals the greater depth of recreational opportunity. Small kite-sailing boards, wet-suits, fishing rods, hiking packs and boots are visible in many of the vehicles.
Go down to the marina and there is even more: sail boats, motor boats for water skiing, jet skis, and an outfitter for white-water rafting on tributaries of the Columbia River.
If there is an outdoor sport that you love – water, snow, mountain, whatever! – or a sport that you’d like to try, then the Gorge is the place for you. It’s happening here, guaranteed.
And after a grueling day on the slopes, on the river, or on the trail, you can relax at one of the many charming bed-and-breakfasts or historic hotels (Hood River was part of the Oregon Trail, after all).
Soothe tired muscles at Carson Hot Springs across the river in Carson, Washington, and then return to the Oregon side of the river to meet people from around the world who share your interest in whatever sport you played that day, or would like to play the next.
You’ll enjoy funky cafés or fine dining. Choices abound. And cap off the night with freshly brewed gourmet coffees or craft beer, since Hood River is the home of the famous Full Sail Brewing Company. Mmm, mmm good. What are you waiting for?
Any time of year, fly in to Portland, Oregon and head east on Interstate 84, along the border between Oregon and Washington state. Within an hour you will find yourself at the heart of the scenic Columbia River Gorge. Be ready to play hard; you’ve arrived at the ultimate recreation destination.

Using The Internet For Recreational Purposes

Posted by hostaldelospoetas.com in Recreation on 13-11-2009

Since the introduction of the Internet to our daily lives, people have considered it to be a vast source of information, as it managed to connect million of computers around the world, from servers belonging to governments, colleges, schools, libraries, museums, science laboratories, leisure centers, sports clubs, and thousands of other organizations. This extremely useful network, just a click away, delivers to all those interested and having a suitable Internet access, the advantages of sharing, exchanging, retrieving and uploading information of almost any sort. From researching for a college or work project, to selecting the travel destination of your dreams, the Internet can be considered a tool that has become indispensable now to most “advanced” economies of the world. Frankly, I am not familiar with another communication medium, so pervasive in nature and vast in scope to have done so much in such as short time after it has been introduced to the public; only television can perhaps enter the same arena, but yet again TV it is not a two way type of communication.
Millions of people today are using the Internet to keep up with their favorite team’s score, to schedule a leisure activity, to communicate with friends residing in another continent, to check the latest trends, to read their favorite newspaper columnist or to write on their blog. But although the Internet can be a very useful tool, for a variety of individuals, as it serves different needs, one cannot find everything in there; not yet at least. For example, even the more progressive among universities libraries do not have every book of their possession available in an electronic form. Sad as it may be, many authors and publishers are still supporting that the negative effects of such a possibility would have a tremendous effect on their sales. Some Internet websites offer books in a digital form, usually available for one only to read and not to download, but again this is a niche part of the plethora of books available at your local bookstore shelves. So, if people are not using the Internet mainly to read books, what other recreational purposes does it serve?
Well, the answer seems rather obvious. People that spend more than 40 percent of their computer time online, have been found to spend more than 80 percent of that time discovering interesting websites, talking to friends, exchanging e-mails, visiting the Net-based music store of their choice, reading the online news, planning a dinner party or reserving tickets for a movie or a sport game. The Internet offers some amazing “site-seeing” tours for people interesting to discover new places from the comfort of their own home or work environment, while it is actually a huge database of onsite reviews, comments, articles, pictures, videos, experts’ opinions and comparison lists for almost everything one can imagine. The Internet can help someone tap all these sources of information through reference databases organized collections of information and search engines.
Now that you know your time over the Net can actually be considered recreational, are you going to open the door and let the sun see your face? I hope you will, because regardless of its immense possibilities, the Internet is still only a recreational tool and should not be considered as a type of recreational activity you should enjoy in expense of your other type of recreational or leisure pursuits. Surf the Web, but remember to go out, have fun, play a game, meet friends, participate in a sport, enjoy a concert or visit the ocean once in a while. A more balanced life will give you more ideas on what to search online next time you decide to visit the World Wide Web.
